It was a pretty typical Sunday at the TOR place. I got moving at about noon. Had some coffee and just sat around until Wifey got up. I made our somewhat usual eggs, bacon and toast for a late lunch. We went to Walmart to pick up a few things. Hermits post today got me to doing some thinking that we need some stuff.
We purchased the following items:
4 mini led lanterns
2 eight packs of AA batteries
2 three packs of 9 hour candles
1 gallon Coleman fuel
Approx 4 months of feminine hygiene items
I tried one of the lanterns out and it is pretty good. Not enough to read a book by but plenty to find stuff or otherwise get around in the dark. That one has batteries in it and is sitting on the dresser. The others are in a bag in the closet.
For the near future I am done with lighting. I will pick up a bigger battery powered lantern at some point and that will have us square for the near term. When my camping stuff in the bunker gets reunited with us there is a Coleman lantern and stove. All and all it was a pretty productive trip to the store.
I noticed that they have more ammo then last time. Didn't plan to purchase any but just figured it was easy enough to go look for the sake of it as I was already in the area to get the lanterns. They had what seemed to be a good selection of rifle ammo (no big empty spots in the display) and there was some pistol ammo. They had at least a box of 9mm and a bunch of CCI Blazer .45. No .38/ .357 mag but other stuff was there.

If you're looking for cheap lighting, go for a solar multi-LED light. I have the Bogo light. It's a very impressive, very utilitarian tool. Has a nice carabiner-style clip on the end, so you can use it as a lantern. (Definitely enough to read by. They even use them to operate on people in third-world countries.)
Instead of sealed batteries, it uses rechargeable AA's. Couple it with a solar battery charger, and you're set for light. Now, it's $40, but that's only because Bogo stands for "buy one, give one." When you buy one, they give one to people in third world countries. You might be able to find a cheaper alternative. Keep it on the window sill to charge, and you're set.
Hand-cranked dynamo flashlights are also a plus. I like the ones which are redundant (solar, dynamo, and battery powered.)
I still need to procure a hand-cranked/solar radio.
Solar power is the coolest thing since sliced bread.
I'm not sure which feminine hygiene products you speak of but if its what I think it is you should have her look into a product called moon cup. Sold out of Europe.
Way cheaper than pads/tampons and my wife thinks it works better to.
Brass, I've got a couple of self powered flashlights. That BOGO light looks cool. Might have to keep it in mind. I was mainly looking for more of a mini lantern sort of thing. Got plenty of flashlights lying around. Need to get a solar battery charger, probably will this week or at least inside the month. Got a battery/ dynamo radio and a solar/ battery radio. Solar power is cool.
Chris, Wifey says EWWW to those. I might pick a couple of those up and keep em stashed just in case.
I would have bought up that .45 if they had it at any Walmart I could get to. Still having an ammo shortage up here.
Everytime I stop at Walmart, I make it a habit of picking up a box of ammo. I figure you can never have enough.
I can spend $15 on a box at Walmart, or stop and get coffee, a donut and a sub on the way home. I will go for the box of ammo IMHO.
Hermit, If my slab side was here I might have bought a couple hundred rounds of it. As things are now I need to make ammo purchases to get above critical levels in other areas.
Brian, I usually do something more or less like that. This week I wasn't buying ammo though.
Buy those solar powerd yard lights. Get the ones that use standard rechargeable AA batteries. You can swap out charged batteries when you need them
Aloha for now
