Dean in AZ, You've more or less hit the nail strait on the head. The elderly vote at a higher percentage then any other group and have plenty of time to call their reps, write letters and volunteer for causes. The AARP is arguably the most effective lobbying group after the bankers and tobacco people.
Don't forget that group was/is considered the biggest population segment (i.e. baby boomers) so of course they will get political attention. So here's my question...if these are the biggest parts of our debt then why not look for ways to trim the fat on these?!?! rather than creating a NEW plan that will spend MORE money because you KNOW these old ones will never die...oh wait, just remembered politicians don't understand how to cut spending...only create new programs. cutting spending never got anyone re-elected!

Gee, I wonder if that's because both parties continuously pander to the Elderly Vote and increase and expand those programs?

He seems to forget Social Security. It is the single largest line item on the budget and well on its way to insolvency.
