I just bought a two pack of these at Sam's. They cost me $28. I could only find one on ebay for $25, so this is a good buy from what I can see. This is a very strong light. It runs at 160 lumen, according to the package. I don't know from lumen, but man, it is very strong. It has a 50% power, and full power setting, and then a strobe light setting. I just wanted to pass it along because it seemed like a great value to me. I'm giving the second one to a relative who could use a really strong light. -Humongous

That is one bit of gear I notice that many people overlook - some good lights, and plenty of spare batteries.
I opened a free checking account last year (my part time job decided to go direct deposit or whistle for a gift card if you dare). They gave me a wind-up Jeep flashlight. Moderate size, has a couple of bells and whistles, three bright LEDs for main light, a blinker.
And according to the instructions, wind for a minute or two and it shines for an hour or so. No batteries. It sits in the glove box in the car.
I believe a lumen is the amount of light brightness from a standard candle at one foot. A standard candle is made up a standard size of standard matterials - it might be a cotton wick and beeswax, and maybe an inch diameter.
Except Astrophysicists decided they had something simpler to use for a reference.
Meaning #1: the basic unit of luminous intensity adopted under the System International () Standard Candle: equal to 1/60 of the luminous intensity per square centimeter of a black body radiating at the temperature of 2,046 degrees Kelvin
In the kitchen, though, where we seldom encounter black body radiating at 2,046 degrees Kelvin,
(From Wikipedia on Lumen)
1 lm = 1 cd·sr = 1 lx·m2
That is, a light source that uniformly radiates one candela in all directions radiates a total of 4π lumens. If the source were partially covered by an ideal absorbing hemisphere, that system would radiate half as much luminous flux—only 2π lumens. The luminous intensity would still be one candela in those directions that are not obscured.
A candela is apparently the tag left when the astrophysicists trademarked the Standard Candle label.
(wikipedia) The candela (pronounced /kænˈdɛlə/ or /kænˈdiːlə/, symbol: cd) is the SI base unit of luminous intensity; that is, power emitted by a light source in a particular direction, weighted by the luminosity function (a standardized model of the sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths, also known as the luminous efficiency function[4][5]). A common candle emits light with a luminous intensity of roughly one candela.
(wikipedia, on lumen) The difference between the units lumen and lux is that the lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread. A flux of 1000 lumens, concentrated into an area of one square metre, lights up that square metre with an illuminance of 1000 lux. The same 1000 lumens, spread out over ten square metres, produces a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux.
Achieving an illuminance of 500 lux might be possible in a home kitchen with a single fluorescent light fixture with an output of 12000 lumens. To light a factory floor with dozens of times the area of the kitchen would require dozens of such fixtures. Thus, lighting a larger area to the same level of lux requires a greater number of lumens.
Enjoy the flashlights!
And one other reference, the Encyclopedia Britannica -
# definition ( in candle (lighting) )
The Standard, or International, Candle is a measurement of light source intensity. It was originally defined as a one-sixth-pound candle of sperm wax, burning at the rate of 120 grains per hour. This intensity of light was standardized in 1921 in terms of incandescent lamps, and candles are no longer used for reference.
Costco has the exact same flashlight (set of two) for $19.99 under the "Techlite Lumen Master" brand name.
Dammit! I used to live in Austin- there's a couple of Costcos there. Now I live in a little town with only S(c)am's. I always loved Costco better. Now I have yet one more reason. Stupid Sam's Club.
Thanks for the tip. Got one for set for me and my bro-in-law. Don't see the Costco one on their website, the one they have is 80 bucks, 360 lumens.
Carlos U.
None of the Austin Costco's have them.. consider it not such a great loss to have moved :(
Only the Costco's in San Antonio and Dallas have them... WTF? I mean there are Zombie Outbreaks in Austin... we NEED these! ;)
Looks like no one posted here since last August. I bought the two-pak at Costco South in Austin tonight...Really impressive for the ~$10/ea.
Techlite lumen master at Costco is now 19.99 minus 5.00 for two.
I just bought a 2 pack of the TechLite Lumen Master flashlights at a Costco in Santee, CA for $14.99 with the $5.00 off coupon which expires on April 3. This is an AWESOME deal considering these lights are alot brighter than my $70 Pelican 2330 M6 LED and use 3 AAA batteries compared to 2 CR123 Lithium batteries which are so much more expensive. The only negative thing I can think of is the lack of a warranty. The Lumen Masters may be brighter and cheaper to run, I just hope they're as durable as my Pelican.
Just a heads up on those super dooper Techlite lumen master from costo. You get what you pay for. I bought 4, 2 have gone bad in 1 week. The circuitry of the endcap is not reliable. As usual buyer beware.
Sometimes that happens
The Techlite works very well, till you drop it. Everything on those flashlites seems to be robust, EXCEPT that battery holder, which, at first look, appears to be of a durable nylon type material. Not so. If that little plastic holder breaks, you might as well throw the entire flashlite away, as even super glue will not save it.
