The Firefox series came about when a teacher moved down to rural Appalachia and needed to get his students motivated about something. They started doing interviews with rural people who still lived more or less as their grandparents had. This lead to them practicing lots of these skills, publishing a magazine and eventually the series of books. These books really have some practical useful skills in them.
I came into contact with these books long ago. My Grandmother (who is quite prepared but that is a whole nother topic) has a pretty awesome book shelf and I saw them and believe borrowed and read the first two at that time. They were very interesting giving both an insight into the rural South and some real practical information.

Make sure you stock up on paper and ink. Each book is between 300 - 400+ pages long. I downloaded them also, (thanks MD), but left them on a flash drive for printing out later.
