So I am going to move far far and away in the near future. The firearms I have here are going to go back home. Without giving very specific info on either end (if you read a lot you probably know both ends:) it would be hard to be in the continental US and be farther from home than I am now. In any case I need to ship some guns home. To be specific I have 1 rifle, 2 shotguns and 4 pistols to send home. I have heard it is legal to just ship a firearm to yourself but am not so sure about that. To make it clear I am not transferring any firearms just getting them back home.
Also I have a decent amount of ammo (2 cases of pistol ammo, several hundred rounds of shotgun ammo and 800rds of '06 ammo) to get home.
Any advice on the cheapest and simplest way to legally do either would be greatly appreciated. I am not concerned with getting anything home fast parse as long as it gets there eventually. It is just going to join the arsenal in the bunker.
If nothing else it is comforting to know that Ma has a fucking arsenal and enough ammo to fight a small war at her immediate disposal. Also if Pa needs it he can cruise over there and as he put it "Pick up a rifle with banana clips" that can easily be accommodated as there are plenty of guns and they get along well. On a side note I am going to leave a Glock 9mm and a pistol grip pump shotgun with Pa (also he lives between a retired Marine and a retired Cop:). If it seems that more then that are needed he can drive to Ma's and pick up an AR. We went to the range and he shot one not too long ago. If nothing else he is a smart enough guy to load and shoot the darn thing. Where they live nothing like that is going to happen all of a sudden so he will have a bit of time to react to things.
Don't really have anything more to say.

You will need to go through UPS. They may only need to know about the ammo being shipped because of Hazmat. I would call them first and ask do not do it in person.
Your best bet would be to physically drive it there yourself. Think OPSEC!
From the BATF website:
"... A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm."
Long arms may be shipped by the Postal Service, but handguns may only be shipped by common carrier, i.e. FedEx or UPS.
I do a website for Powder, Inc. Jerry Dean sells black powder, and black powder ammunition.
He ships via UPS and FEDEX. I imagine that contacting either with your shipping questions would be a good place to start. Chatting with a gunsmith or gun dealer might be as liable to open a can of worms as asking the BATFE a "simple question". Staying below the radar, if you can, will be best.
Unless you know someone driving that way in the next couple of weeks, willing to haul the stash for you. You might write an open letter to authorities, specifying that your friend is taking your personal weapons home for storage while you are . . . away from home. You can get it notarized, and that may well cover things.
Actually, you might check with your local sheriff or police. Don't describe how many items you are concerned about, just what options there are for getting the stuff from here to there, without being mistaken for gun running.
Please let us know what kind of arrangements you make, and how well they work out.
3rdman, Good point.
8:28, I will not have the time to drive it there nor would it be desirable to have my car there as I would need to drive it back. I didn't say all the details of my travel but that would not work.
Oblio13, Thanks a lot. I sort of thought that.
Brad K, Good ideas. An open ended conversation with some cops could help.
Take a look at this link. It has good, easily understood breakdowns of the shipping policies of major package delivery outfits, as well as the U.S. post office.
About two years ago, I bought some rifles for my nephews for their Christmas presents. I shipped them UPS, but I had to drive to Gainesville, Georgia which was a hell of a long drive. Then I had to stand in a long line, but eventually they accepted them and shipped them without problem. You can't just go to a UPS pick up place, you have to go to one of their headquarters.
i think handguns have to go next day air
