"I just think it's smarter for me to concentrate on my own goings on and my own doings and quit worrying about what Obama is doing, it's just making me mad."
-Hermit
I probably would have struck Obama out and put politicians in but other then that I could not say it better myself. Focus on stashing some more long term stable food or truly storing what you eat and eating what you store. Maybe you want to start raising chickens or cutting and splitting your own firewood. Instead of stressing things you can't control work to make your own life more sustainable and independent.

I agree whole-heartedly Hermit. When Democrats get into office I just shut off the tv. My anxiety level decreases significantly when I do this.
The problem with ignoring what the government is doing is that whatever it does still applies to you. Don't worry about it if you don't want to but don't ignore it. That new regulation that you ignored about how many coats of paint you are allowed to have on your tool shed can still cost you $500.
Ignorance may really be an excuse in our society of 10,000 new laws every month but the government doesn't see it that way. Governments are not forgiving of any violation when their tax revenues go down as much as they have recently.
8:08, If it decreases your stress level that is a good thing.
Bitmap, I can't speak entirely to what Hermit meant. As I see it there is a line between being completely ignorant of events and stressing them. Keep track of current events, shooting your reps an email and maybe go to a town council meeting if something is happening. I know that I can get all worked up about something that I can't at all control. There is just no point in that.
I think Hermit meant exactly that. Take a hard headed approach, keep an eye on the political but don't let it ruin your dinner.

I'm not a worrier. Never have been. I am one of those people who can know whats going on, but not freak out too much if I don't like it (at least most of the time). A lot of folks waste a lot of energy trying to change things they don't have any power over. People get completely bent out of shape over something Letterman said. I mean, can't you just say, "that guy's an idiot" and move on about your day? Seriously.
A big one is the sex scandals. I gotta say, I just don't care. Not when Clinton did it, not when Mark Sanford did it. Just don't care, and don't get why anyone does (except the wives). Guess what? These guys are wicked powerful. They have women throwing themselves at them all the time. In civilized societies, rich and powerful men have mistresses. Here, they lose their careers over it. Men and women fight our biological urges constantly when we choose to live in monogamous relationships. At least for men, we usually don't have a million opportunities like these big shots do. They slip, and from time to time, somebody gets caught with their pants down (haha).
They tried to IMPEACH Clinton over it. It is such a non-issue, yet the politicians use these scandals for political ends. They prey upon the emotions of housewives to gain power for their team. It is a ridiculous farce the public plays into, time and again.
We just got back from a week-long trip to Texas. My husband and I were so wound up over the whole Obama healthcare issue that we agreed to completely ignore the news for a week. We didn't read newspapers, watch TV news or visit any of our usual political junkie websites. We had a very relaxing vacation.
