There was just an hour show on Discovery Channel (I think) on Joe and his jail.
The poor, poor convicts are forced to wear pink underwear, they have pink bed sheets and the traditional black-and-white striped prison garb.
If they want to get out early, they can choose to work on a chain gang. I couldn't count the number of times they equated it with slavery.
Uhm, the CHOSE to be on the chain gang, so that would negate the whole slavery thing. Must have been too complex of a concept for the producers of the show to grasp.
He treats these criminals like criminals, not pampered wards of the state.
I always have liked that guy. He does something positive about a real problem. I heard on NPR, and I hope it isn't true, that the government is going to start putting illegals in hotels instead of jails because the jail environment is too harsh.
Prison is to keep dangerous animals away from society, not to arrogantly attempt to do God's work by punishing their sin.
Their work should go to pay for their upkeep and to remunerate any extant victims. They do not owe a debt to "society," because "society," a collective of individuals, cannot be a victim. Only individuals can be victims.
