This Outraged Me

So I am sitting enjoying my favorite part of the work day, well my favorite part except driving home at the end, sitting in my chair drinking a cup of coffee between cleaning up from PT and heading back to work. I am watching CNN because AFN does this rotating news thing between all the full time news networks (donated so we can watch US news) and I heard something which outraged me. Some girl  (well a hippy dippy 20 something) was talking about the organization she works for. What they did really doesn't matter but when she was describing the kids they help she used a phrase, "court involved" which just stuck out to me.

She didn't say juvenile offenders or parolees or even felons. She used a vague phrase that is completely blameless, in fact it goes as far as to push away any sense of possible blame. Heck if I have to go down to the courthouse to fill out some paperwork I am in a sense court involved. This is at least as bad as "undocumented workers" if not worse.

My big issue with this is that when we take away blame for peoples actions we take away responsability. Responsability is the lynch pin to just about everything productive and good in society. I don't particularly look down on felons or parolees as a group. Some of them are total scumbags but then again some like say, Randy Weaver are probably decent folks albeit ones who made a mistake. As one guy on one of those prison investigative shows once said "You are all one messed up day from being right here" and he had a very good point.

My issue is that if people, particularly teens and those in their early 20's are told by people they value and respect (like the upper middle class hippy dippy 20 something working with them) tell them that their actions are not their fault they will internalize that and keep doing the same dumb stuff.

The culture is dead. We are among the few that do not worship death. I am not longer surprised.

You should try teaching in a public school sometime. That experience would reinforce the theme. Kids are taught in public schools that they are absolutely not responsible for anything they do or don't do. It is because they are "underprivileged" or "come from a broken home" or "have emotional issues" that they misbehave, not because they know they can do it and get away with it. I had one little bastard that used to intentionally hit smaller children, so he would get sent to the office by the playground supervisor. Then, once there, he would be given a candy bar, and told to "sit here and relax until you feel better and more in control." So what do you think happened every time the little p***k wanted a candy bar? I never sent him to the office because I knew that was what he wanted, but he gamed the system everywhere else. How will that kid and the millions like him behave when they get out on the street? Jail time. Unless they get involved with some punky liberal a**h*** who lets them back out on the street because "it's not their fault."

As he said, the culture is dead.

It seems like a lot of things don't make sense anymore. I would more expect that kind of sentiment from a 60 year old, but not so much a 40 year old.

I remember thinking when I was a kid that we aren't all of that much smarter individually than folks from a century or two ago. Heck, when it comes to survival, they probably had us beat, hands down. How long would it take me to figure out that the world was round if I didn't have a school book to tell me it is? I watch those commercials for "IBMers". You know, the ones that show people walking fast and talking about all the amazing things they're doing? They make it seem like we're really enlightened. Whatevva. We don't know squat. We have computers and televisions and talking heads telling us everything we "know". We don't make much anymore, or so it seems to me. I heard on the radio that we still put out a lot, but I don't see it. I see closed plants, and more on the horizon, at least here in North Texas. We're just consumers of plastic that comes from China. Pop culture is alive. Will it eat itself? How can it not? How in the world can you run from the police when you have your shorts down under your arse? People have some strange ideas nowadays. It's not productive. I'm tired of griping about that.

Have these folks been proven guilty in court yet? Until then, they are not felons/scumbags, etc. Maybe their crimes are minor like hopping a fence to explore a junkyard (trespassing), or even jaywalking. Maybe they were arrested for protesting the theft of their income by "scumbag" politicians or for starting unjust wars.

Who do YOU blame for your not being able to spell RESPONSIBILITY properly?

As TOR defense, I'm gonna blame the school system (I know that's my problem), they're too busy in their indoctrination policies.

Oh by the way, I believe you meant to say "Whom (not who) do YOU blame for you (not your) not being able to spell RESPONSIBILITY properly?

Nice job, Freedom.

I'll tell you who/whom/(Brother) I blame... and it's in this order:

1) Firefox

2) The Romans (eunt demus?)

"Is that a motion to war?"

3) The Gypsies

When all else fails, blame the Gypsies-

Sorry FSB, I think I am correct here...

Is there some reason why people choose to nit-pick at TOR's spelling? He's not a walking dictionary, but that isn't why we enjoy his blogs.

If you hate his grammar/spelling/punctuation so much, don't read the blog. Or at least at have the balls not to post as Anon.

12:13, I don't blame anybody. I write this blog for fun and well editing and spell checking are not fun for me. Sorry if me misspelling a word bothers you.

Freedom Strikes Back, Thanks. The issue is more that I don't care at all to edit for spelling on the blog. Stuff I turn in at work is checked for that and thus is correct.

Maggy, Thanks.

Its not the school systems' fault. Thats not to say that they arent crap, but the responsiblity for brats rests solely on parent(s) shoulders.

Kids with no respect, responsibility, purpose, or character were made that way by their parents.

Parents who are selfish, absent, self-absorbed, sick/evil, or just down right stupid - they create these brats who become "court aquainted" or whatever the phrase was...

A kid can be told that they dont have to take responsibility for their actions at school, but it slides right off, because at home they have parents that are involved and engaged.

Society's problems cannot be solved in the school system - this notion that the school system can undo damage done at home or that it is someway their responsibility to do something other than teach a kid to write is part of the problem of why they are crap!

And as for "innocent until proven guilty" - thats crap too... We are talking about kids who need to realize that their actions are directly affecting their future paths - they need to be actively choosing NOT to become Charles Manson and to give them a fluffy title like this almost pushes them down the wrong path. Dont want to be called a punk thug? Then quit acting like it kid!!

Sorry if I stepped on your ranting toes there, TOR... but this soap box was too big to pass up ;)

Oh, and jumping a fence where I live will get a kid taken home by the cops to their parents who will kick their butts!!

Its not a "minor" crime - its saving their life - jumping fences can get someone shot!
