“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” — Robert A. Heinlein

Commander Zero On Avoiding Disasters and Katrina

"The folks who sat through Katrina had a couple days notice that things were going to get ugly. “Oh, but they were the poor and underprivileged. They had no way to leave!” Sure they did. I guarantee you that if I put a gun to your head and told you that if you cant find $50 in the next three days Im going to kill you, you’ll come up with fifty bucks. Those people could have taken a bus, a train, or just bought a cheap bicycle and gotten far enough inland in three days that they weren’t stuck on rooftops baking in the sun waving at Coast Guard helicopters."

They could have walked out with three days' notice. But why walk, when Uncle Sugar will come with busses and grub? They underestimated Katrina, and overestimated Uncle Sugar. Whoops...

Getting people out of their homes when that's all they have is tough. It may not make good sense, but it's human nature. I lived on the beach once, and a hurricane came. I sent my wife and our new baby to Raleigh, but I planned on staying to do all I could to protect my possessions. Eventually, it got so bad on the island that I knew I'd made a mistake, but I figured it was too late to leave. Then the cops came (they saw my vehicle in the driveway) and told me to get off the island. They weren't asking and I didn't argue. In retrospect, it was a really stupid move but it's hard to walk away from everything you've acquired over a lifetime of hard work. I know people will say it isn't very useful if you are dead and I don't disagree. Just a thought on human psychology.

New Orleans is a welfare city, and Katrina pointed this out in fine detail.

They wanted the government to take care of them, and when they didn't the looting started - or barbarians acting like barbarians.

If you are told hell is coming in three days, then leave and go someplace else.

This is probably going to sound racist, but here goes anyway . . .

I think in addition to authorities warning the public of Katrina's arrival, they should have hired Wanda Sykes and / or Chris Tucker to go out in the 'affected neighborhoods' and explain in their venacular to get the hell out off Dodge.

The people in New Orleans were extremely dependent on others watching out for their welfare. They never figured they would have to lift a finger to save themselves - the government would send buses to help them evacuate.

If your house is on fire and you refuse to leave, then you are going to burn.

If an illegal alien can walk 3 days through the broiling desert, while avoiding detection, then a NO resident can walk/bike/hitchhike out of town to avoid a Class 5 hurricane.
