I Can't Wait

Some time ago I observed that if you are a veteran and over the age of 50 it is socially acceptable for you to say literally whatever you want loudly and in any company. You are allowed to hold grudges against the countries you fought in, the countries who supported them and a few other groups and nations for reasons nobody but you is clear on. Best of all what you are able to angrily talk about doesn't need to have anything to do with any war, let alone the ones you fought in. If someone complains you start talking louder about the war and how you fought for this country and can say anything you darn well please.

I am already a veteran so now I just have to make it to 50. This is going to be awesome.

I hope you get the opportunity to do so. What could happen is what happened to Vietnam veterans who were claimed by media to be 'baby killers', and rather than argue, just let the matter alone and suffered in silence. Sure, atrocities were committed (by both sides), but not all of our veterans participated in it.

My salute to all of our veterans who fought honorably and gave some sacrifices, some the ultimate. That does include the author of this blog as well - THANK YOU for your service to our country.

OMG....you remind me so much of my grandfather. He's almost 90. He was shot down in a B-17 over Germany, spent 9 months in a POW camp, and then went on a Death March. His father (my great grandfather) was gassed in Germany during WW1 and died later. The weird thing is that my grandfather has never said anything bad about the Germans.....but he hates the Japanese. One time (circa 1982) my dad bought a Mazda (a Jap car). Holy cow! I thought Gramps was gonna blow a circuit and have a meltdown. He's said other things about the Japanese that I don't think are appropriate for this blog.

You should hear my grandmother talk about the Germans. OMG. Here's a sampling of what she has to say:

1.) "Why can't those (insert expletive here) people mind their own business?"
2.) "All they want to do is take over the world all the time. Why can't they be happy with the country they have?"
3.) "I've had just about enough of those people."
4.) "Can't they do anything else beside start world wars?"

The biggest gripe they both have is the Red Cross. Apparently, after Gramps was liberated and sent home, the moment he stepped on to American soil he saw two stands offering donuts and coffee - one was run by the Red Cross (for PROFIT) and one was run by the Salvation Army (for FREE). To this very day, if you give money or support the Red Cross in any way, shape or form for any reason whatsoever my grandparents are convinced that there is a special place in hell waiting for you. I have heard other children and grandchildren of WW2 vets say the exact same thing.

Holy moly, the war was almost 70 years ago but the grudges live on.

I can't wait for you to turn 50 either.

Sam

Once you hit 50 you can start wearing those Veteran hats too. If you're under 50, you just look silly, but after 50 people come up to shake your hand and thank you for your service. Ahhh, the joys of getting old!

What is considered a veteran these days? Used to be you had to have fought in some war, police action or an action somewhere around the globe. I worked with a guy who was in the Marine Corps Reserve. During the first Gulf War, his local outfit got no futher than California. He had a license plate saying he was a veteran of that war. Now his outfit did not go to the Gulf simply because they were not in shape for combat in any way or form. His commander told them they were eligible to get the licensees. Was he a veteran or not? I think he was a pretender and a thief of someone elses' valour. Am I right or wrong?

6:08, Most of the say whatever they want vets I know are from the Nam era. You are very welcome.

Flight-ER-Doc, It is just my observations. I am going to get one of those hats and just say whatever I please. Suppose it would slightly limit your job options if you start yelling about the war at work.

TJ etc, To me a veteran is someone who has fought in some sort of war or whatever we are calling war that week.

Jack, Definitely getting the hat. With all sorts of pins on it.

At 69 I enjoy the opportunity to say what I think. I am not nor have ever been PC.

My salute to all who have served.

My hat today has an American Flag with an Eagle imposed, and USA on the bill.

The media sucks, talking heads reading what the government wants us to hear-Not the truth.

I was PROUD to serve. But if you want my fellow Americans to save your sorry ass country perhaps YOU should be willing to fight harder.

See Ya

What I want to know is; what brought this on?

Now, as a >50yo vet, I will openly agree with the statement. I will however use your way-too-valid statement as fodder for a post on my site too.

You did make me laugh out loud.

Thanks

My grandfather, a WWI vet, also hated the red cross. Funny thing that.

Who says you have to wait. Do it now. All the pent up frustration will kill you before your 50.

I say whatever I want right now. And I don't have any vets to thank for that. The Viet Cong weren't about to invade. Neither were the North Koreans, the Germans, The Japanese, the Afghanis, the Iraqis, the Panamanians, the Grenadans, the Dominicans, the Filipinos, or the Spanish.

I will not join the military worship. I will not condescendingly praise anyone who was once a hormone-pumped 18-year old and went over 3,000 miles away to die at the behest of some scumbag politicians who claimed they were dying in that forsaken hellhole to "protect America." And they believed the lie. They still do. They have to.

Feel free to threaten me with violence for saying this (while simultaneously parroting the line that you fought to protect my right to say it. It's another "bright, shining lie.") Feel free to say I'm not worth physically attacking. Feel free to say whatever you like. You have that ability. (I don't say "right" because nobody has a "right" to speak falsehood.) But that ability didn't come from anyone fighting in the United State military in the past 150 years.

The word "Sacrifice" means "to make holy." What are you making holy?
