Cold Steel Order Arrived

My Cold Steel order arrived in the mail today. I got 4 "Long Hunter" knives and 4 18" spear point machetes. Needless to say I have been fiddling with one of each.

I am happy with both purchases. The machetes are very nice with a slightly blade heavy balance. I don't have any brush or trees to destroy but imagine they would make short work of either, or zombies.

After some use with the Long Hunter maybe I will write a product review but for now we've got initial impressions. First of all I think it is probably important to evaluate these knives against their competitors, not far more expensive blades. Is one going to replace the Cold Steel folder that lives in my pocket or the Ka-Bar I prefer as a fighting blade, no. However for less than the price of either of those knives I got 4 quality knives.  In time I would like to pick up a couple spare Ka-Bar's and Cold Steel folders but those aren't cheap.

The Long Hunter is described as a "common French peasant/kitchen knife". I imagine it would be a pretty good knife to have on your belt for a days worth of varied tasks. I got them for the sake of redundancy. Hadn't planned to pick up a bunch of extra cutlery right now but at that price it was too good to pass up.

My kukri does very well, this is Wyn btw, had some privacy seeking work issues . . . I have yet to be displeased by a Cold Steel product, though I know a folder they made, forgot the name, was not up to task. The fixed bladed tools they make are good for the money. I have chopped through Texas brush, and ceder trees with my kukri.

Wyn by any other name. I still love my Kukuri and it is the first line chopper/ zombie decapitator. Interesting that you didn't like one of their folders. Mine is great.

I really like the spear point machete. It reminds me of a gladius. I'd also like to get a kukri to compare it to but I think that the spear point would be easier to use. I can't wait to put it to use.

The western hunter and finn wolf that I received fall into the light kitchen cutlery category. To be honest I'm not sure that I'll use them very often. I'll probably give them away as gifts. I did throw one of the western hunters into my car camping kit along with the rest of my filet knives. Basically, I was hoping for some bushcraft knives. I ended up with decent kitchen knives. I would have gone with something else had I had a better idea of what they'd be like.

I've got a bunch of CS products, their quality is not as good as it used to be, but the price of what you pay for what you get is still pretty good. I have several machetes, the Bowie design pretty useful if you have to use it for more intricate tasks. The heavy cane blade in two versions, the long handled version.does a good job on keeping our berechas cut back on our ranch.

CS's shovel stays in my truck as well, a multi-tool that sees a lot of use. If I was ever in a Reginald Denny type of position, having one of these handy would help out a lot. And easy to explain to Officer Friendly that it isn't a weapon, its a tool. Sharpen all three sides of the blade - it'll do the job of a hatchet pretty well.

Of those inexpensive knives, I own the Roach and Canadian knives - great knives for the money. One of my favorites is the Trout and Bird neck knife, a darn handy camp knife that is never out of reach and can even be slept with no problems - I often forget I have it on.
