Homework Assignment for the Week

It is easy to talk about decreasing your expenses and simplifying your life. However talk is cheap. This week I ask you to do that if just in a small way. To make it easy for you folks to be successful I will give you an option.

A) Buy something used. Of course I want you to buy something you already planned on getting. However instead of buying it new I want you to find and purchase it used.

B) Sell something you don't need anymore. Sell it to a friend or at a Flee Market or in the paper or on craigslist or ebay.

Unlike most of our homework assignments the due date for this one is a bit more flexible. It can take time to buy or sell stuff. However I think figuring out what you plan to buy or sell and moving towards doing so this week is probably reasonable.

Personally I am looking for a coffee maker for my office at work. My initial plan was to just go to the store and buy one. However I got to thinking that if I had a bit of patience I could save some money.

No doubt everyone is familiar with Craigs list. You should find your local version, and be sure to check out the "Free" stuff.

Also check out "Freecycle" in your local area. Lots of free stuff there as well - although some areas are much better than others, for some reason.

Just picked up 3 brand new single sheets yesterday. Still in original packaging. Not a biggie, but I'm amazed at the stuff people give away. Another thing - if you have a specific need(like your coffee maker), if you opt for emails, on Freecycle at least, you need to sign up for individual emails. I get the digest version, and find that much of the good stuff is gone within 90 minutes of being posted. I get a list with the "offered" and "taken" notice on the same list. The other option, of course is to leave it open and check it every hour or so - but I think that would get pretty tedious.

My project for the week is to buy nothing but veggies. There's nothing I need and yet I find my self at the store buying something anyway. So, this is buy nothing but veggies week and only enough veggies to get me though the week.

Are 99Cents stores nationwide? I kind of assume so, but I don't know. It surprised me to find what good deals they have on fresh food - and even herbs and spices. Not a great selection, but not all that bad either. My husband likes those little "fingerling" bananas...he pays $3.50 for a bunch I can buy at the 99Cent store for $1.00.

People buy stuff new? LOL
Gosh I have been doing my prep for awile and I work hard never to pay retail, get it at a yardsale or the local Pawn shop, Salvation Army or goodwill stores. It's amazing the stuff you can get.
I do recommend that you start a list! or the money will just trickle away on stuff you don't really need. Every spring I do a new list of the things I want or need and how much I'm willing to pay for it. I find this keeps me focused and on budget.

I have a vendor account at eCrater and sell stuff all the time. Have picked up some items from govt auctions and made an ok profit, but it's a lotta trips to the post office. Selling on Craigslist is usually more trouble than it's worth with all the no shows.
