CarTeachO asked the question "What if you could only have 5 guns?". I was going to answer it as my daily post but then he went and did a real nice post on it, so there went my nice stolen idea.
My first 3 were easy:
Defensive pistol; concealable- Glock 19
Rifle; military pattern, magazine fed- AK47- Could go either way on this one with an AR as the other option. Like both but right now I lean AK.
Shotgun- Remington 870
The next one was pretty fast also:
.22 Rifle- Ruger 10/22
The last one. Well I got pretty stuck on this. A .22 pistol would be nice but with a .22 rifle isn't really necessary. Also in theory I could have a converison kit for the Glock (and by that theory one for the AK, if they exist, and eliminate the 10/22) but to me that would be gaming the scenario. A tiny pistol (Keltech P3AT, Ruger LPC, Seecamp, etc) would be nice for really NPE carry. A scoped rifle for hunting and such would be nice too (one of the advantages of the AK is that it is legal to hunt and quite capable of harvesting deer sized game at reasonable ranges, a real benefit of a semi auto .308 would be that it could hunt at distance also.) I guess it is a toss up and I would likely go with a scoped bolt action rifle such as a Remington 700.
What are your 5?

Just the basics:
22 rifle, my 10/22 or Nylon 66.
AR-15, cause that's what I grew up with.
Semi or bolt 308 rifle.
12-ga Remington shotgun, I'm not picky on model as long as it's Remington.
45-cal M1911, cause that's something else I grew up with, although recently got a 45-cal FNP that I'm becoming VERY fond of.
Although I see great utility in a 22 handgun and 357 revolver, you should always go with what you know and I know the above pretty well. If you want to game it a bit, a 6.5 upper for the AR would work pretty well as a replacement for the 308 for most purposes. There's a thread on the Larue industry page on ARFCOM where Mark Larue killed an elk one shot at 400+ with a 6.5 Grendel and you don't need much more than that.

I agree with your first 4, but my last would be my bb gun.
Its quiet - it does the job on small game/birds - and bb's are dirt cheap. I like I can use it on some of the same things I would use my .22 on but at a cheaper cost and it does less damage to meat.
Marlin Lever Action .22
Mossberg 500 12 gauge
AK in.308
Springfield M1A1
45 cal. 1911
Glock 26
AK... underfolding
Mossberg 500 / 835
10/22
Another Glock... probably a 19
ar15,bolt 308, P94 Ruger,Super sigle six; and a BLACKHAWK Convertible. it's what i got; can scrounge ammo if need be. shotgun would be number six. it takes a lot of work to be good with a 12 gauge. if i'm down to five guns SHITF,my planning has failed; all the backups have failed; my family is most likely gone and i ain't far behind them. good blog ryan. good luck on the redeploy thanks delr
Depends on the scenario. For purposes of this exercise, I'll assume that I moved to a nasty anti-gun zone that imposed some arbitrary limit on me.
.22: I have a beautiful Marlin lever action that I'd be loath to part with. A 10/22 would be more practical, though. So it is scenario driven.
Shotgun: Probably either a Mossberg 500 pump with a variety of barrels or an over/under (we shoot skeet, and you can use the o/u for birds too).
Rifle: My .308 Xbolt. Good for any North American game except coastal grizzly bears or moose outside of 100 yards.
The fourth and fifth guns are harder. I would be tempted to either go with:
1) Outdoor Adventures with Occasional CCW: 4" .357 revolver and a snubbie .38 pair. If no concealed carry is required then a lever action pistol caliber carbine might be desireable.
2) Concealed Carry/Higher Crime AO: Polymer handgun (I like the S&W M&P) in full size and subcompact variants. Rig one of them up with a light for "bump in the night" usage.
3) TEOTWAWKI: Service-size handgun (any polymer pistol is fine) and some sort of AK-47/AR-15. I would also consider replacing the bolt action .308 with an M1A or AR-10 (although they are way heavier...).

Sticking with what I have;
- 9mm semi-auto pistol
- 12 ga pump (e.g. Rem 870/Mosb. 500)
- .22 semi-auto rifle (Marlin 60)
- .556 rifle (Mini-14)
- Mosin Nagant
I'd prefer and need to get a tube-fed .22 rifle. A lot don't like the Mosin Nagant, but it's rugged, accurate, and cheap to store thousands of rounds. Also have a .30-06, but at 4-5x more per round, can't stock up or practice as much.
In a fantasy world where I could pick any weapon and assume vast stockpiles of ammo, probably would go M-14 for the high-powered rifle.
Luckily don't have to pick just five, so in reality .410 and 20 ga shotguns, .22 pistols (semi-auto and revolvers), a KelTec P3AT, the .30-06, a few SKS, etc. are in the "arsenal."
If I had to bug out on foot, w/me carrying bulk of gear for family of four, I'd take only;
- 9mm semi-auto (one each wife/self)
- KelTec P3AT .380
- .22 Beretta Neos carbine (<4 lbs)
It just so happens that I have exactly five guns:
Heritage .22 revolver
Marlin 60 .22 rifle
Mosin Nagant M44 carbine
Mosin Nagant 91/30
Mossberg 500
The only thing I'd like to do is get a synthetic stock, bipod, and scope for the 91/30. Otherwise I'm comfortable with what I have. BTW, I didn't count my old Crosman bb gun...
If I could only have 5 guns, this would be them, in order of priority:
#1: 9mm - Glock 19. If I could only have one gun, this would be it.
#2: .22 Rifle - Ruger 10/22
#3: .223 Rifle - Ruger Mini-14, would be OK with a 5.56 AR or 7.62x39 AK
#4: .308 Rifle - FAL or PTR
#5: .357 Pistol - Stainless Ruger SP101 - concealable, reliable, uses common calibers, good backup for primary pistol.
I didn't put a shotgun in there because it is primarily a short range household defense or bird/rabbit hunting tool and the ammo is too big to carry more than 100 rds. I would use the pistols/.223 for inside the home defense and the .22 or snares for rabbits/birds.
What I'm holding:
1. Mini 14
2. Judge revolver (45LC and Shotgun)
3. 10/22
4. Moss 500
5. Stevens .308 bolt, scoped
I gotta say I love my 10/22, but I just purchased a Marlin .22 bolt with a 22 inch stainless barrel and 10 round magazines. It is super accurate and will probably outlive me. It's challenging the 10/22 for dominance,
Defense pistol - either Glock 21 or Ruger Security-Six, I guess the Glock gets the nod.
Defense rifle AK or M1 Garand. The AK for short length and firepower, the M1 for range - but very heavy, unfortunately. Mine is a .308 chambered model.
Shotgun - 870 12 gauge.
Hideout gun - 3AT or .38 snubbie if Ruger Security-Six was choice.
Rimfire - Brno #1 452.
I do wish there were six though - I think a .22 pistol is indespensible if you live in the country. A Ruger Super Single-Six would be my choice.
And my deer rifle - what I've used since 1977 - a Remington 600 in .308.
if you needed a multi purpose rifle but dont mind that it is a singleshot, cabelas is selling the rossi trifecta rifle, included is a .22 lr barrel, 20 ga barrel and .243 with a case and scope base. now as to a 22 conversion for the ak and ar, there is one for the ar obviously, I dont know about a conversion for the ak but I have seen an ak styled rifle in .22, sorta like the smith and wesson .22 i suppose
I am pretty close to being there in reality. As of now, I have an AR carbine,a mossburg 20-inch Persuader,a 10/22, Buckmark, and two self defense guns(9 mm Glock 19 and XD45 service).
