“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” — Robert A. Heinlein

A Simple Life
Awhile ago I found myself with a co worker watching a guy herd some goats. We were both stressing various things and I asked him "You ever thing we've got the wrong idea"? To which he replied something to the effect of how he wished he was herding goats right then. A very simple life like that would certainly have some benefits. It is simple and predictable as well as giving you plenty of time at home with the family which is something I've thought a lot about lately. Stressful jobs and doing big things may be missing the point. On the other hand I don't think I would want to trade medical and dental plans with this fellow. Also while it is nice to have his kids around, playing and helping him they aren't in school and their prospects to do better than him are slim. However my own little walled mud brick compound, an AK, a garden, some fields and a goat herd doesn't sound too bad right now.

You know, I totally agree, We started urban homesteading and now (While I love my job) I would rather stay home and tend to my bees and chickens rather than sit in the office. Thanks for your site.
OK, I'm going out on a limb here. I don't know where you are or where you saw the goats but. In the U.S. were many of us have stressful jobs and stressful lives we also have the best healthcare in the world. My life was saved 6 years and one month ago in an open chest surgery in a beautiful hospital in the town where I live. I could have been in an average medium sized town anywhere in the U.S. and I would have got the same care. I'm guessing that the goatherder would simply die and probably take months or years of sufferring to get there. I'm staying here.
I live pretty much like your goat herder, though I'm sure I have more modern amenities. I vote for the simple life. The more complicated the social structure, the more vise like the grip it has on you and the more stressed you are.
Yes, anonymous, we have the best health care in the world. And in the great US of A, you could (past tense) be a goat herder and still have that great health care. But NOT NOW, thank to fascist health care coming down the road. I do not think that anonymous would of had it so easy if he needed that surgery say, in a few years, like 2014 when the new fascist health care laws go into effect. Do some homework, and get off the MSM brainwashing. People like you are so much a part of why we will continue to accelerate into a third world country like the NWO has planned.
Take into account the stress that is caused by our hectic lives. People burning out before they get out of their 30's. Paying off homes and college loans acquired before they knew what they were doing.
Picking a job that you LOVE really helps with some of that. I can't believe people stay in jobs that they hate to go to - 8 hours a day, 52 weeks a year - that sux!
I am a goatherder. And chicken rancher. Just got my garden going.
But Anonymous (6/25/2011, 3:52pm), I live near an excellent hospital in the next town and have supplemental insurance to be life-flighted to Denver if necessary. You can have both, if you look. Although writing off a "simpler" lifestyle, you are missing out on destressing yourself and family, and missing out on the joys of raising a farm and ranch.
And before you mention about how you can't leave your job, or some other excuse, I am a Civil Engineer. I work in town and come home to my animals, and although spent time in a big city, I've never looked back when I moved to the middle of nowhere.
Also while it is nice to have his kids around, playing and helping him they aren't in school and their prospects to do better than him are slim.
Define 'better'
Why is it that those who do manual labor and simple tasks is not considered an admirable trait by today's standards? Joel Salatin versus an overworked I.T. guy...you decide.

I would prefer to have both options. A fair healthcare system and a simple job. It's insane and archaic that our healthcare system is tied to employment. It came about from the end of the Depression and trying to attract people to employers who were bound to not increase pay rates by law. So they could only attract good employees by offering health care and other benefits. Our system is unique in the world and spiraling into a constantly more expensive format. Yes, the care is great but it covers fewer and fewer people and destroys entrepreneurial efforts because being self-employed is so difficult to get insurance and have a family.
Concrete compound - check
Awesome healthcare - check
Kids around - check
Herds - check
Garden - check
Fields - check
But I only have an AR-15 :)
