The thing is that life is just a series of small choices. We make them literally every day. Over time these choices add up to our lives. While we are somewhat constrained by various rules, regulations and laws I don't see a point in dwelling on that. You can work to change things you don't like, figure out how to deal with them, ignore them, whine and complain or some combination theiron. However please remember that a choice to do something you really can't afford or put away a few dollars, hit the weight pile and road for a run or sit on the couch eating fast food, practice your skills and improve your preps or sit staring at the TV and or computer. These choices will over time add up to your life. Make good ones.
“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” — Robert A. Heinlein

Ryan - i couldn't agree with you more.
i have several people that i keep at arms length in my life that always talk about how "lucky" my hubby and i are right now - we purchased our 10 acre dream property 2 years ago and moved here last december. which means we are both fully retired at ages 40 (me) and him (45). and let me tell you - there was no luck involved!!!
we both worked hard our entire careers - mine was spent with 10 yrs in the military and 12 yrs working for several high-stress government agencies. for the last 7 years of my career i was working 12-14 hours days including weekends. my hubby was an IT Business Systems analyst who was employed big bucks to propose solutions to clients who never followed any of his advice. and during the 10 years that we have been together we have learned to garden in the city, grow a large portion of our own food, reduce, re-use and re-cycle, we saved as much as we could, paid off all of our debts, stopped eating out, learned to cook from scratch, learned to can and put food up every year, began stockpiling and prepping and then found our dream property and although we could have spent another year or 5 living in the city "making the big bucks" - we decided to take a leap of faith and come out to a barren 10 acres, draw our line in the sand, put in some raised beds and try to live off of our savings for the rest of our lives.
THERE WAS NO LUCK INVOLVED. in fact between the two of us, we only have a half-ration of luck - and it is all bad!!!
EVERYTHING is about choices. choices that you make daily. choices that are reflected in your lifestyle. choices that are more than just words.
every single choice matters. and the life that you are living is a reflection of your choices. there is no luck involved.
oh boy did you hit a nerve with this post....teeheehee....friends still?

I have to make choices every day. Seems like I do alright on some of them but sometimes I really miss the boat. I just have to deal with the aftermath as best I can.
