“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.” — Robert A. Heinlein

Quote of the Day

"I live my life as a social conservative, but won't impose my personal moral code on others. I expect the same courtesy from others."

A fine quote.

The other day I saw a quote that religion is like a penis. Many people have them, they are usually proud of them, but nobody likes them jammed down your throat.

A fine quote, except my moral code forbids murder, robbery, theft and I do impose this on others. In fact I consider that to be a conservative belief. So which moral beliefs should be held by society and that society is able to enforce?

Anonymous,

Do you really "impose" it on others? I believe that you do not "impose" it on anyone. I believe that you refuse to allow others to impose their belief (and subsequent action) that murder, robbery and theft are acceptable behaviors. You refuse to let them impose on others (truly impose, by force)the physical symptoms of their insane beliefs.

This "impose" word gets thrown around an awful lot. God exists. An objective universal moral norm, based on our human nature as creatures made in the image and likeness of God exists. My saying that imposes nothing upon anyone. I will not try to force anyone to believe it.

People espouse their beliefs every day. Your desire not to be exposed to those ideas does not make it an "imposition." I'd rather not hear the nauseating, State-worshiping phrases, "Our brave men and women in uniform . . ." or "Fighting for freedom" ever again. Yet such shills are not imposing their views on me until they try to use violence to make me believe it. And many have threatened.

I always figure if someone does something I don't agree with or don't like, as long as they aren't trying to force it on me it isn't my business. For years and years up here, you couldn't buy a beer or a glass of wine in the county because the Southern Baptists had a choke hold on the ballot box and always voted it down. But for the last year we have had beer and wine, and the town has not been burnt down, there have not been mass rapes or murders, and the Zombies have not attacked. To each his own, as long as nobody tries to make me toe their line.

Anonymous, so a "law and order" politician is someone who is openly against murder, rape, and theft? If so, I don't think there are any non-"law and order" politicians. So you can vote for anyone without fear of imposing your moral code, right?

But is that all that politicians impose on you? Have you ever heard of national politician who openly said "I support ending the war on drugs?" (Besides Ron Paul.) Or "I oppose forcing people to pay for wars they think are immoral?" (Not even Ron Paul. He thinks that people can be forced to support war through taxation, so long as it's declared by Congress.)

Any politicians who have said, "I oppose seat belt statutes?" "I oppose the minimum wage and overtime statutes?" "I oppose making you pay for any and all welfare for other people, and I will abolish it?" "I oppose making you pay for other kids' indoc...education?")

Anonymous,

How does someone who uses violence to stop someone from harming his views "impose" his moral code on the aggressor? He's physically defending himself, not forcing anyone to believe an idea.
