Q-If you could take only 5 items with you in a bag to survive in the wild what would they be?
A- Well I am starting with a bag as a freebie which is cool. I would take a good knive like a Buck 110, a fire starting impliment, a steel water bottle, a compass and some 550 cord. My bonus #6 would be water purification tablets. (#5 and the bonus might be better switched around).
What is your answer?

These are fun threads, always great to see alternative ideas and items.
For my locale, my shelter would be a 1) a light canvas tarp (for sun shelter and wrapping in cold weather) and 2) hammock to sleep on. We don't have a lot of cold temperatures (might freeze 2 days a YEAR here) and things that bite or sting are pretty numerous - we need to sleep off the ground.
The 3) metal water bottle, 4) Cold Steel 12" Bowie machete and 5) 1 qt. pot w/ lid would round off the list.
It's hard to think of anything other than the big 5 you mention: knife, fire, water, compass, and cordage.
How about, top 5 per category instead? If I thought about clothing, I might include: weatherproof jacket, bandana/scarf, stocking cap/boonie hat, change of socks, gloves.
Hard to beat your list, it's really the essential things to have. If you can start fire you can purify the water so I wouldn't swap out the 550.
Instead of water purification tablets, you might consider a Sawyer PointOne water filter system. Light, easy to use and guaranteed to filter 1 million gallons. I haven't used mine yet, but if it works as advertised my family and I won't have to worry about drinking water. All for less than $60. FYI, I have no affilitaion with Saywer. I just like doing whatever I can to help others who are like me and trying to prepare for whatever may come our way.
Ryan,
1. A bow saw or camp saw for making shelter
2. A fire starter like matches for what else but making a fire
3. A steel US military canteen full of water
4. A water purification method such as water purification tablets
5. Insect repellent or mosquito net
My bonus #6: a nice gortex jacket with hood for warmth
Peace
