Things are going well here in the PNW. I am a few days into leave and have a respectable scruff on my face. We have been catching up with family and enjoying being back home. Hitting our favorite restaurants and enjoying all sorts of cool stuff. I have been enjoying some good PNW beers. Gear and stuff that has been waiting here for me is being tested. I am working on finding the right tool for each job and building useful systems (both ongoing processes).
After about 3 more weeks of leave we will be heading down to the South West where we will be for a few months. The plan is to camp out along the way. This will be the first time we all stay outdoors together and should be an adventure. Thankfully our In Law's are downsizing their stuff which includes a lot of camping gear. FIL was involved in scouting for years and ended up with a ton (literally) of stuff. Since he has the "buy nice, once" mentality it is the kind of stuff that stands the test of time. The gap between me being able to comfortably sleep out as an individual and doing the family camping thing with a kid should be largely filled without spending any money which is sweet.
After the drive down to the Desert Borderland known as the Southwest we will of course get settled in. Won't be there long enough to do anything crazy but certainly long enough to unpack. I have a few things I want to accomplish while we are there. In no particular order:
I need to get my AR sorted out. This means purchasing a backup iron sight and zeroing it in then zeroing the optic. Also I want to figure out/ resource some sort of light. Ideally I would like to upgrade a lot of parts. The gun (a benefit of buying from friends is that I have used it a few times) shoots strait and is reliable but isn't exactly mil spec. I will probably buy an upper and if I can conveniently find one from a private party another lower. Yeah that would pretty much mean buying a whole new gun. Not sure if I will sell of stuff that becomes redundant or stash it away but that is a problem for another day. Obviously the substantial (not a backup iron sight which costs $50 or whatever) purchases involved in this are pending sufficient funds. I really won't know where this one sits until a couple months from now when the dust from the move settles and I have figured out some other things.
Systems will continue to be developed as well as changed to suit a new enviornment. Our bug out/ whatever you wanna call em bags will continue to be refined. Most of the stuff is already present, just working on the right combination(s) of it.
Food storage will be our big push. This will last well until it is complete. TEOTWAWKI Blog's Alexander Wolfe did a post on a bug out food bin that I really liked. We will build one of them. It is a good thing to do and will not be a real inconvenience when we move again.
This will fits nicely into the next system I am working on which is a heavy (vehicle) bug out type setup. I figure our bags, personal weapons (rifle and pistol each, plus a .22) a tub of food and a tub of base camp stuff (big tarp, tools, pots, pans, coleman stove and lantern, etc) and an ammo can. Yes I am definitely pulling a lot of ideas from TEOTWAWKI Blog, it they have great ideas.
Anyway that is what I am looking at doing in the next 6 months or so. Also expect a lot of contests, shooting and product reviews.

Hey - Glad you're getting some useful stuff out of T-Blog. Your blog is one of the few that I check on a regular basis.
Good luck on the AR upgrade quest. A solid optic (Aimpoint PRO) is the best addition I've made.
For lights, if I was to do it over again, I'd look at the Surefire and Streamlight pistol lights, with an added tape/remote switch for ease of use on the rifle.
