Today I drove from Twin Falls, ID to Las Vegas, Nevada. Lot's of empty country in the Great Basin. Multiple (2 or 3 I think) times gas stations were over 100 miles apart. Northern Nevada is a nice place if you like Butte's and sage brush. Also I think Nevada is where mobile homes and travel trailers come to die. Seriously it is like folks here are all trying to start their own junk yard or something. The economy here must be bad because tons of businesses are closed (in populated town, not just the old Ghost type towns and the desert) and everything is for sale. I had lunch in some town in central Nevada and I think somebody with a few bucks could buy the whole place!
Las Vegas is pretty crazy. I don't think it is a place for me. Wifey got me a real nice room at a casino for a great price which is cool though.
Today I did take some pictures but am too tired to upload them. On the bright side I ate better and consumed less caffeine today. The old body thanks me.
Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to get to my destination. Well I am off to bed.

Vegas has been like that since I last visited 3 years ago, all along the streets, sidewalks, and roads, abandoned scrap metals, broken down cars waiting to be scrapped. It never ends there, but at least hey, Casino!

Ryan, sad but true. I live in N. NV and the economy is bad. However, don't hold all of us to what you saw. There are some really pretty areas here too. I live in a mobile home but it is not dead yet.
If you ever get to spend some time in this "desert" (not the "sandbox") you may be surprised a what you find. There is more water, wildlife, and history than you can ever see from a car on the highway.
All that said, I am driving from No. to So. next week for some training and you are right. From the hwy it is a whole lot o' nothin'. (Thank God for sat. radio.)
I re-read what I said and need to clarify. I did NOT take what you said as an attack. Unfortunately, most people have the same view of NV as yours, Vegas and not much else. Most people I know that do not live in Vegas wish Vegas was in another state. Politicaly, mentality-wise, and most other ways, it is no more than an eastern suburb of LA.
(curious what town you had lunch in. Your discription fits many.)
Hope the rest of your trip is both safe and more enjoyable.

David, As to Vegas. A lot of it is that I was tired and alone. Also wasn't interested in gambling, getting drunk, a fancy dinner, shopping or girls at my door in 20 minutes. With Wifey or a few buddies I am sure a fun night could be had.
DesertRatJak, Do you have 3 other mobile homes and 4 travel trailers in various stages of scavenging/ decay? Just funning. I don't think Nevada sucks. Also nothing against mobile homes.
I think it was the Nevada Hotel in Ely. Off 93 someplace.
I am done and safe,
Thanks R
