I think this sounds like a mom rule. Dads don't care too much as long as nobody bleeds in the truck.
If that's a Dad rule, 3/4ths of your blog title is a lie. ; - )
The issue would be that Dog is 8. Too old for such things.
If Kiddo and Dog can work out an agreement of sorts, I see no need for tyrannical intervention. Free Market economics... Dog provides ferry service in exchange for ever other lick on the ice cream.Dog should have the foresight to invest some of the proceeds in medical insurance.
Dog doesn't like it hence parental involvement.
