I really was set on the idea of a Leupold Mark AR 1.5-4 and almost pulled the trigger on it earlier today. However for some reason I didn't. Got to looking and it seems like a true 1 power is an advantage at the bottom end. Got to looking at what was available and reading a ton of junk on ARF and such.
The Burris scopes come up a lot. The TAC-30 and the newer MTAC. The MTAC seems like a pretty good scope. I like the 1 power and the reticule is awesome. Honestly my only moment for pause is that Leupold generally makes good stuff and I do not know much about Burris. However on the downside of the Leupold, aside from being 1.5x at the bottom is that the only illum is a tiny center dot.
There were some other options out there. I'm not pinching pennies so no need to get a Millet or Leatherwood but on the other end a Schmidt and Bender Short Dot or Night Force is not happening. Vortex makes a scope in that range but I don't like the reticule. If there is something else out there under 6 bills (though I would like to keep closer to $500 with a mount)that is a true 1 power with a decent illum reticle please let me know.
If anybody has used or owns both the Mark AR and MTAC I would really like your input. Cost is about the same so it is not a factor.

I don't own either, bro. I borrowed an MTAC last night actually, to test run. I did about 30 minutes of dry fire with it last night, and today it's getting zeroed and I'm going to run some limited live-fire iterations with it. I will say, at 1.5x, the speed difference, admittedly without running the timer, was negligible at best. Even HH6 tried it out and went, "Damn, I might get rid of my EoTech!" Good glass, I love ranging reticles, and it's hell for stout, as far as I can tell. Of course, it's the 40mm objective lens, so my M4, with it's 14.5 inch looks like a SDM rifle now, but......
John, Was that the 1.5-6 power?
Check out the SWFA 1-6.
Neither. I went with a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x, capped. Love it. Did the 50/200 zero, works awesome. The illuminated dot is 1 MOA, like my EOTech. At about 1.1-1.2x it's good with both eyes open. Considered the MTAC or TAC30, but don't want a 2.4 MOA dot. Also, wanted something that could be used with other calibers rather than the 5.56 hold overs of the MTAC/TAC30. Can't beat the Vortex warranty, either.
Suburban Survivalist, I hate that reticule. Ended up going MTAC.
Yeah, the lines on it are too small for some and they are not for a fast hold over. Most reviews say the MTAC has very good glass. I'd like to hear how well the hold overs work for you at longer ranges, if you get a chance to test that.
Ryan,
Yes. And I've shot it a bit now, and do like it. The 2.4MOA dot, as noted, is a little of a PITA, but if you do your zero properly, and use a specific point on the dot, it works. It took me three 5-round groups to get zero'd, and the largest group I shot was only 1.5MOA, so the dotsize isn't a dealstopper for me.
John
John, Thanks for letting me know. I am pretty glad you did not think they are garbage as I ordered one last night.
Went with the 1-4x power as it fits my concept of use better. The 1.5-6 was tempting though.
