Not Dead, Just Busy. Here is Some Music

Yesterday I pretty much finished the door project. Today we got fire wood then started laying a laminate (fake wood type) floor. Stopped at 10:30 because it occurred to me the neighbors might not appreciate a power saw going outside that late.

Getting the projects done is definitely my priority this weekend. Will return to normal posting after that.

EDC Contest Entry #4 Thomas

Hey Folks, I am pleased to bring the first entry for our EDC Contest. First we will quickly recap what is going on. The broad strokes are this. I want to share and discuss the stuff we carry around every day AKA EDC. Taking pictures of our stuff and talking about it is my goal.

The prizes will be as follows:
1st Place: 3 Sport Berkey Water Bottles donated by LPC Survival ($69 value)
2nd Place: 1 Blackhawk Holster donated by LuckyGunner.com ($50 value)
3rd Place:  1 Snare-Vival-Trap cough garote cough donated by Camping Survival ($17 value)

Wildcard: This one goes to whoever I want to give it to for whatever reason I feel like. It will be a grab bag donated by yours truly. The exact makeup is TBD depending on what I have lying around  and may include books, gear, medical stuff or even a couple silver dimes. ($30+  value)

Check out the details and my example post here.

 Onto Entry #4

Since I am a 16 year old high school student I can't take the knives or fire starting gear into the school during regular school days but i leave them in my moms car and i carry them every where else.
On the upper left I have my Columbia hiking boots that i always wear just in case my parents cant pick me up or I can't use one of there cars (when I borrow them to drive to school). they are comfortable and light, waterproof, oil protected, and a discreet color.
Next is my Swiss Army (Wenger) belt that I have had for years. I use it to carry my flashlight and my fire steel. I have also read and seen many other uses for a strong belt.
Underneath the belt is my Patagonia waterproof wind breaking jacket that is great in all the conditions I have been in. It is small and light but does the job right.
Below the jacket is a Klarus xt11 cree led flashlight that will pump out 600 lumens for 2.2 hours 150 lumens for 7.3 hours, 10 lumens for 12.3 days (295 hours)m and a tactical strobe mode. All of this on One Rechargeable 18650 which I carry an extra one (shown left to the flash drive).
Next to the klarus is a 32 g flash drive with important documents and it gives me the ability to put any important software on it. (plus a few games).
my wallet carries a small about of assorted cash just in case, my ID, and a few cotton balls/matches.
One the right of the wallet is my Swiss army knife that has a big and small knife, wood and metal saw/file, bottle and can opener, wine opener, scissors,  chisel, parcel carrier, a reamer, and 3 different screw driver sizes.
To the right is my fire starting gear for well fire starting
Last but not least is my iPhone 4 in a nice case that is great for emergency calling and listening to Led Zeppelin.
Thank you for your great blog that people of all ages can read.
 -End-

Ryan here. Please thank Thomas for his entry. I think it is pleasantly surprising every time I see teenagers with their stuff together. I had some outdoor skills then but didn't have any sort of thought out EDC or survival type kits.

Eagles Lyrics and My Ramblings

"So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains and we never even know we have the key"
-The Eagles "Already Gone"

I heard this song for the first time in awhile and the lyrics stuck with me. I wish (in addition to my other personal crusades of financial and physical fitness)  that I could figure out a way to reach people. They just don't see that the stuff which is driving them crazy is under their control, should they chose to do something about it.

I had the advantage of coming to a few key realizations on debt, finances, and life before doing things which would limit my choices. It is a lot more difficult to make your life simple if you come to some of these realizations a decade and a bunch of choices (maybe a house you can barely afford, a bunch of debt, a spouse who likes a certain lifestyle or whatever) and I do see that. However at the end of the day it is about choices.

We can choose to live the life we want or not. This may require hard choices which change our standards of living and maybe even the relationships we are in. The alternative is to sit around and be unhappy quietly or to whine about it.

Remember, you hold the key.

Conversation of the Day

To set the stage. A couple people at work were arguing about something
dumb.

Another fellow-John Lennon said "all you need is love".

Me-"He got shot. If the guy had a piece and a bullet proof vest maybe he
would still be alive."

It was kind of harsh but true. Be hard to kill.

quote of the day

"We're never gonna survive, unless... We get a little crazy"
-Seal

One of the 'joys' of living overseas is a lack of decent radio stations to listen to. German music seems to be split between dance/ techno and bad random old American pop music so there isn't much to be had there. I listen to the AFN station because I am too cheap to have a CD player in the car. The music is pretty random, otherwise I would not listen to Seal. However this quote is pretty good none the less.

Randomness: Music

I do not like much new music. I would have a hard time thinking of anything I like that came out in the last 10 years and almost an impossible time with the last 5 years. However one of the joys of my dial staying on the military radio channel is that I get to listen to lots of new stuff, at least it isn't obscure 80's pop music or in German. One song recently has caught my liking. Wifey says I am exposing my Mangina but I don't really care. The song is catchy and I like it for reasons I am not certain about. While it certainly doesn't fit into my normal tastes (1970-1999ish rock and country) I like this song. More interestingly I like the SONG not just the video.

Also I just want to say that I am seriously tired of hearing Party In The USA on the radio. Yeah I got it, lots of people think the song is catchy. Also of course Miley Cirus is Americas favorite piece of jail bait. Seriously though I don't listen to the radio for 40 minutes a day and I ALWAYS hear that song. When we get another vehicle it might be worth getting a CD player so I can listen to my own tunes.

This Amuses Me

This was on the blog a long time ago. It amused me a lot then. I thought about it a week or so ago and decided to watch it again. Hope you enjoy it half as much as I do.

Gonna Get Drunk Drunk Drunk On Christmas

I am actually not going to get drunk on Christmas. Going to open some presents and have a quiet day and a ton of food with Wifey. This reminds me of a few family gatherings and just plain amused me when I saw it on the TV a couple minutes ago so I posted it.

quote of the day

I ain’t gonna shoot anyone, and no one shoots at me, cos I’ve got a gun’”
-Steve Lee

I did find it interesting that he is Australian seeing as they currently have a pretty neutered form of gun ownership but the song is catchy all the same.

quote of the day

"I like my sugar with coffee and cream"
-The Beastie Boys

quote of the day

"This used to be a fun house
But now it's full of evil clowns
It's time to start the countdown
I'm gonna burn it down"
-Funhouse lyrics

Heard this on the radio today. Didn't particularly love the song as pop isn't my thing. However the lyrics are so frickin awesome that I (the king of not remembering things) remember it hours later.

A Presidential Move I Can Get Behind

I don't personally agree with a lot of things our current administration does. I am however going to give them their due praise when they make good moves the same way I have and will continue to lambast our "conservatives" and other somewhat like minded figures when they fuck up.

I don't know if you pay attention (or even care) but a rapper by the name of Kanye West pretty much stole the thunder of Taylor Swift at the VMA's. While one musician being a jackass to another isn't anything new Taylor Swift seems like a pretty classy gal and fucking with someones acceptance speech is messed up. Back to my point...

Our President Barrack Hussein Obama is of the opinion that Kanye West is a "jackass" for his treatment of Taylor Swift. I have my concerns about the way my nation is moving but having a President a) follows current events and b) speaks his mind are both very refreshing. The world of politics can really use more people who call it as they see it. This is a trend which could get interesting very fast.

Oh yeah and just in case you forgot I really like Joe Biden.

Just to be clear I tagged this post with the label "asshats" entirely for Kanye West because well he is a colossal asshat.
